What are you listening to? (Mar - May 04)

Dave Douglas - Strange Liberation (Bluebird, 2004)
Douglas' follow up to Freak In has gotten closer to traditional jazz but still has that adventurous flavor. This sounds even fusiony at times. Bill Frissell sounds great in this album.

Adam Rogers - Allegory (Criss Cross, 2002)
Dang! the first track, Confluence is explosive. Allegory is that type of album that require repeat listens (for moi) to get the feel of it. I was expecting this to be a front man act but most of the songs sounds more like a group effort. Chris Potter and Edward Simon on sax have definitely made their presence known.

God bless the internet

I just listened to Nicholas Payton on iTunes play "Wild Man Blues" and bought it immediately. I've heard lots of guys try that number and even if they got all the notes right, it didn't have the pizzazz of Louis. This one is sure different from Louis but it has the same ease of playing and spirit.

Before the internet I had heard of Payton but had never heard him here in the jazz desert I live in. Wow. What a set of chops. And originality, too. Miles me no Miles. Payton is awesome. Go to iTunes and listen for yourself.

Agreed. I think Payton is the trumpeter I've heard these days that is able to deliver the music with some of the same punch
Armstrong did. There's something about his sound that stands out
from other trumpeters on the scene, and his phrasing is excellent.
