I love her! She has such a distinct voice and her strength is her understatement -- no showy virtuosic displays, no swinging like she's possessed. Rather she takes an idea and fully contemplates it -- meditates on it even. Cobalt Blue and Luc's Lantern with William Parker are great; bassist and drummer are fuly engaged, not just supporting her.

I'll have to check this one out.

Pat Metheny - Question and Answer

A minor modern masterpiece, IMHO.

Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual Trio -- "Live at the River East Art Center" (delmark)
with Billy Bang ... and the somewhat under-the-radar Ari Brown on tenor.

Album to start 2009 and Obama Jazz White House!

I have been listening to GREG OSBY "PUBLIC"... It is a fantastic Jazz album to start the New Year! Yes, I did the cover artwork, but the music is SUBLIME!

Can you dig it?

Love it! Previously these were pricy Japanese imports, and I'm glad this came out before I got them all. Disk 1 has Kogun and Long Yellow Road. Standouts include "Memory" which has a beautiful extended solo for flugelhorn, although the taped voice effects which interject might not be to everyone's taste (think Ken Nordine). "The First Night" is surreal -- listen to her writing for flutes. "Opus Number Zero" is a showcase for her saxes; Lew's beefy, soulful tenor is a treat on this one.

I've really only gotten into the first disk though I know some of the other music already. Insights is my favorite of the five albums that are part of the set, so I'm looking forward to that. Now if we could just get Road Time reissued...

Monk's Bones - Monk's Music Trio. I have an earlier disc by Monk's Music Trio, a SanFran group, and thought it was ok, but nothing special. This disc is something special. The addition of two trombones (Max Perkoff, son of the group's pianist Si Perkoff, and special guest Roswell Rudd) to the usual trio adds a vital spark. Nice arrangements and the use of a berimbau on "Friday the 13th" is a stroke of genius. This is the best $1.95 clearance CD I have purcahsed in many a moon.

Now listening to:

Live Volume Four - Woody Shaw
