Jamil Nasser was a fine bassist. I particularly enjoy his playing on George Coleman's I Could Write a Book: The Music of Richard Rodgers, a 1998 date with Harold Mabern and Billy Higgins. Nasser plays some really melodic solos. You can also hear him to good advantage on the recent Coltrane box set Side Steps, which features him on 3 Red Garland albums: Soul Junction; All Mornin' Long; and, High Pressure. Even at such an early date (when he was still known as George Joyner), he was outstanding.

RIP, Mr. Nasser. Thanks for the music.

I got to meet him at one of Cobi's events at St. Peter's. I was the "house" bassist and he was in playing with someone, he had such a strong sound; it was great hearing how my bass sounded in his hands...

Sad news indeed. I only had the opportunity to hear him on the bandstand once with George Coleman at the Vanguard. Billy Higgins was on drums, so as you can imagine the shit was happening. Rest in Peace Jamil Nasser.

Sad news. Unfortunately I saw Jamil only once - at the 1979 Willisau Festival, in a band led by Louis Hayes, with Frank Strozier, Harold Mabern, Leon Thomas and Freddie Hubbard. Too long ago to remember him in particular, what with all those illustrious cohorts.
