Thumbs up Jan Garbarek in Cardiff (Wales) 20/10/04

Well the cavernous enclosure that is the St Davids Hall and a third full at that boded poorly for this concert. However, a prompt 8pm start and as usual no dialogue from the Quartet saw a hushed crowd enjoy an atmospheric concert. I must confess at first depite being a long term fan I thought it was rather all to measured and melodies that were hypnotic and so on and so on. yet once they seemed warmed up so did we. There were of course solos by all the group (except Jan himself) and of the three (Weber, Mansur, Bruninghaus) the percussionists was the most passionate , yet Webers was technically awesome. Yet how can I really compare them? All four musicians at the peak of their form and yet together thay did weave some amazing patterns and moods. Was it jazz? Well there were some tunes/refrains I guess you could whistle and it was all very Nordic, European and evocative of snowy wastes.I'm not sure , but it was uplifting, contemplative and moving .I guess you had to be there!

Glad you enjoyed the show; I am envious, as there's no sign of them making it across the pond anytime soon.
Best!

I've been at a Garbarek's concert in Lisbon [May '04] and it really disappointed me... Only the last track and the encore (Song For Che) were quite exciting, all the rest was a bit previsible...

Ian.

I saw the group in Manchester and was dissapointed, as you suggest it was all very measured and not that origional for me. Two hours plus was good value, but four songs played and this tested the patience of many at the show.

The new album is much better, the personal are different overall it was worth seeing but only just!

Regards
