Hi guys I just wanted to give you a quick review of the (dual disc = 1 side cd/ one side dvd) Disc version of kind of blue by miles davis. I will skip the obvious praise of the princple album and review the documentary that is on the dvd side of the disc. The documentary is problaby the best jazz doc I have seen since the doc on bluenote records. I expected a trivial exploration into how good the album is and how great miles davis and the enitire quintet was, but it was more. They analyzed each compoisition from the album. I was happy to hear some deep revelation and articulation as to how the album was concieved and what made each track so phenominal. I actaully think it is worth the buy. It only cost me 15 bucks other places on line sale it for 13 bucks. Anyway it is a great remaster of a classic album.

bill,
i enjoyed the documentary too. talking heads include: bill cosby, herbie, ed bradley, me'shell ndegeocello, q-tip, shirly horn, jackie mclean, john scofield, dave liebman, jimmy cobb, ira gitler, and eddie henderson. there's a photo gallery and audio outtakes from the master sessions. i believe it was directed by ashley kahn. |

Can anyone determine whether the CD side of this dualdisc is newly remastered (again), or is it the same as the '97 release?

The CD side is exactly the same as the 1997 reissue.
The DVD side contains two versions, the PCM version who have less tape noise than the CD side version, and slightly wider stereo separation. The 5.1 surround version is apparently mixed down from the PCM version. I guess the music on the DVD side is exactly the same as the music on the Sony SACD issue? I cant find the stated photo gallery on the DVD though. Do they mean the DVD documentary or simply the pictures in the original liner notes? I still prefer my noisy crappy bootleg copy of the almost complete take of these sessions, 40 + 24 minutes. I guess that will be the next thing to rerelease and sell to the people. |

Great package! The 5.1 Surround version is awesome in its clarity and warmth.
What are the chances for DualDiscs of Sony's other holdings? Mingus Ah Um, Ellington, Monk, Brubeck ...

I won't be buying this or any other DualDisc release. This format was brought on to kill SACD and DVD-Audio, two high-resolution formats that I like a lot. The DVD side of these is compressed for DVD players and is digitized at 24 bit/48 kHz rate. While I'm sure it sounds fine, I really, really like the SACD I have. If Sony had simply stuck to it, and made the switch to CD/SACD hybrids, we wouldn't even be having this discussion about a DualDisc.

Was the documentary on the DVD side made specifically for this package?

Personally I would not consider it as a specially made documentary. A lot of people talking about a recording session that most of them were not involved personally in. Miles Davis comments are not included at all.
Its very heavily edited with a lot of short clips making it slightly difficult to watch. What about instead including the legendary complete 25 minute Robert Herridge TV transmission from 1959 with the original video broadcast from the original video tapes, not the crappy version that are copied onto film? |

sounds interesting....
i didn't know this was out there.
Criticisms aside (i think someone posted that the doc wasn't complete or there were other docs that could have been added as well) it DOES sound interesting enough for me to add to my small but growing collection. (and the price is right too). I have a DVD Audio 5.1 system but not SACD, so this works for me. sold! thanks for the heads up man. |

I looked at this package the other day and noticed that there is a disclaimer saying that the CD and DVD may not play on all players. After hearing about the documentary, I'm glad I passed on buying it. I've bought "Kind of Blue" in three different versions/formats and unless I'm going to see a hologram of the group playing in my living room, I don't think I need another version.
On a side note, are dual discs encoded differently than standard CDs and DVDs? How incompatible are they with standard players? |

Kind of Annoyed
I just bought the dual disc and in my haste to tear it open I didn't verify if the DVD side was DVD Audio. Sure enough it's not. What you get (in addition to the documentary) is enhanced LPCM Stereo, which judging by the size of the files 617mb is not much better than regular cd audio.
as for the 5.1 mix, Hah! a pawltry 179mb, now a good mp3 stereo version will clock in at over 100mb, so the difference between a 179mb DVD Video surround sound mix and a true DVD Audio Surround mix (I'd guess almost 2gb) we'll it speaks for itself. I think the Dualdisc packaging and ad campaign while never promising DVD-Audio, is a dirty trick If you really want a copy, look for mine on EBAY |

Sony DualDiscs are a crock. They never embraced DVD-Audio and there's no way they're going to start now. All of their DualDiscs have 16 bit/48 kHz LPCM audio on the DVD side. It's not "DVD-Audio"... at least not at what most people consider for high resolution. It's really just the audio from a DVD movie. Not for me.
There are some DualDiscs out there that have true DVD-Audio encoded on the DVD side but they are few. Most of them that are like this have already been out as a standalone DVD-Audio disc. Kevin |
